Greatness of the New Priest

20 And inasmuch as He was not made priest without an oath
21 (for they have become priests without an oath, but He with an oath by Him who said to Him:
a“The Lord has sworn
And will not relent,
‘You are a priest1 forever
According to the order of Melchizedek’ ”),
22 by so much more Jesus has become a1 surety of a abetter covenant.
23 Also there were many priests, because they were prevented by death from continuing.
24 But He, because He continues forever, has an unchangeable priesthood.
25 Therefore He is also aable to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives bto make intercession for them.
26 For such a High Priest was fitting for us, awho is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, band has become higher than the heavens;

Hebrews 7:22

By so much also (kata tosouto kai). Correlative demonstrative corresponding to kaq oson (the relative clause) in verse Hebrews 7:20.

The surety (egguov). Vulgate sponsor. Old word, here only in the N.T., adjective (one pledged, betrothed), from egguh, a pledge, here used as substantive like egguhthv, one who gives a pledge or guarantee. There may be a play on the word eggizw in verse Hebrews 7:19. Egguaw is to give a pledge, eggualizw, to put a pledge in the hollow of the hand. It is not clear whether the author means that Jesus is God's pledge to man, or man's to God, or both. He is both in fact, as the Mediator (o mesithv, Hebrews 8:6) between God and man (Son of God and Son of man).
