Hebrews 8:1

The New Priestly Service

1 Now this is the main point of the things we are saying: We have such a High Priest, awho is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens,
2 a Minister of athe sanctuary and of bthe true tabernacle which the Lord erected, and not man.
3 For aevery high priest is appointed to offer both gifts and sacrifices. Therefore bit is necessary that this One also have something to offer.
4 For if He were on earth, He would not be a priest, since there are priests who offer the gifts according to the law;
5 who serve athe copy and bshadow of the heavenly things, as Moses was divinely instructed when he was about to make the tabernacle. For He said, c“See that you make all things according to the pattern shown you on the mountain.”
6 But now aHe has obtained a more excellent ministry, inasmuch as He is also Mediator of a bbetter covenant, which was established on better promises.

A New Covenant

7 For if that afirst covenant had been faultless, then no place would have been sought for a second.
8 Because finding fault with them, He says: a“Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah—
9 not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they did not continue in My covenant, and I disregarded them, says the Lord.
10 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the aLord: I will put My laws in their mind and write them on their hearts; and bI will be their God, and they shall be My people.
11 aNone of them shall teach his neighbor, and none his brother, saying, ‘Know the bLord,’ for all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them.
12 For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, aand their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.”
13 aIn that He says, “A new covenant,” He has made the first obsolete. Now what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away.

Hebrews 8:1

In the things which we are saying (epi toiv legomenoiv). Locative case of the articular present passive participle of legw after epi as in Luke 5:5; Hebrews 11:4, "in the matter of the things being discussed."

The chief point (kefalaion). Neuter singular of the adjective kefalaiov (from kefalh, head), belonging to the head. Vulgate capitulum, nominative absolute in old and common sense, the main matter (even so without the article as in Thucydides), "the pith" (Coverdale), common in the papyri as in Greek literature. The word also occurs in the sense of the sum total or a sum of money (Acts 22:28) as in Plutarch, Josephus, and also in the papyri (Moulton and Milligan's Vocabulary).

Such an high priest (toiouton arxierea). As the one described in chapters Heb. 4:16-7:28 and in particular Hebrews 7:26 (toioutov) Hebrews 7:27-28. But the discussion of the priestly work of Jesus continues through Hebrews 12:3. Toioutov is both retrospective and prospective. Here we have a summary of the five points of superiority of Jesus as high priest (Hebrews 8:1-6). He is himself a better priest than Aaron (toioutov in Hebrews 8:1 such as shown in Heb. 4:16-7:28); he works in a better sanctuary (Hebrews 8:2, Hebrews 8:5); he offers a better sacrifice (Hebrews 8:3 f.); he is mediator of a better covenant (Hebrews 8:6); his work rests on better promises (Hebrews 8:6); hence he has obtained a better ministry as a whole (Hebrews 8:6). In this resum‚ (kefelaion) the author gives the pith (kefalaion) of his argument, curiously enough with both senses of kefalaion (pith, summary) pertinent. He will discuss the four points remaining thus: (1) the better covenant, Hebrews 8:7-13. (2) The better sanctuary, Hebrews 9:1-12. (3) The better sacrifice, Heb. 9:13-10:18. (4) The better promises, Heb. 10:19-12:3. One point (the better high priest, like Melchizedek) has already been discussed (Heb. 4:16-7:28).

Sat down (ekaqisen). Repetition of Hebrews 1:3 with tou qronou (the throne) added. This phrase prepares the way for the next point.
