Hebrews 9:2

The Earthly Sanctuary

1 Then indeed, even the first covenant had ordinances of divine service and athe earthly sanctuary.
2 For a tabernacle was prepared: the first part, in which was the lampstand, the table, and the showbread, which is called the1 sanctuary;
3 aand behind the second veil, the part of the tabernacle which is called the Holiest of All,
4 which had the agolden censer and bthe ark of the covenant overlaid on all sides with gold, in which were cthe golden pot that had the manna, dAaron’s rod that budded, and ethe tablets of the covenant;
5 and aabove it were the cherubim of glory overshadowing the mercy seat. Of these things we cannot now speak in detail.

Limitations of the Earthly Service

6 Now when these things had been thus prepared, athe priests always went into the first part of the tabernacle, performing the services.
7 But into the second part the high priest went alone aonce a year, not without blood, which he offered for bhimself and for the people’s sins committed in ignorance;
8 the Holy Spirit indicating this, that athe way into the Holiest of All was not yet made manifest while the first tabernacle was still standing.

Hebrews 9:2

A tabernacle the first (skhnh h prwth). See Hebrews 8:2 for skhnh. Large tents usually had two divisions (the outer and the inner or the first and the second). Note prwth for the first of two as with the first covenant (Hebrews 8:7, Hebrews 8:13; Hebrews 9:1). The large outer tent was entered first and was called agia (Holy), the first division of the tabernacle. The two divisions are here termed two tabernacles.

Was prepared (kateskeuasqh). First aorist passive of kataskeuazw. See Hebrews 3:3. For the furniture see Exo. 25, 26. Three items are named here: the candlestick (h luxnia, late word for luxnion) or lampstand, necessary since there were no windows (Exodus 25:31-39); the table (h trapeza, old word, Matthew 15:27) for the bread (Exodus 25:23-30; Leviticus 24:6 of pure gold); the shewbread (h proqesiv twn artwn) as in Exodus 25:30; Exodus 40:23; Leviticus 24:5-9. Probably a hendiadys for the table with the loaves of God's Presence.
