The Heavenly Sanctuary

11 But Christ came as High Priest of ^athe good things to come, with the greater and more perfect tabernacle not made with hands, that is, not of this creation.

12 Not ^awith the blood of goats and calves, but ^bwith His own blood He entered the Most Holy Place ^conce for all, ^dhaving obtained eternal redemption.

13 For if ^athe blood of bulls and goats and ^bthe ashes of a heifer, sprinkling the unclean,¹ sanctifies for the purifying of the flesh,

14 how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without¹ spot to God, ^acleanse your conscience from ^bdead works ^cto serve the living God?

15 And for this reason ^aHe is the Mediator of the new covenant, by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions under the first covenant, that ^bthose who are called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance.

The Mediator’s Death Necessary

16 For where there is a testament, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator.

Ashes (spodov). Old word, in N. T. only here, Matthew 11:21; Luke 10:13. Common in LXX.

Of a heifer (damalewv). Old word (damaliv), a red heifer whose ashes mingled with water (meta udatov, verse Hebrews 9:19) were sprinkled (rantizousa, present active participle of rantizw, in LXX, though rainw more common) on the contaminated or defiled ones (Num. 19) as the blood of bulls and goats was offered for sins (Lev. 16).

Sanctify (agiazei). First-class condition, assumed as true. This ceremonial ritual does serve "for the cleansing (kaqarothta, old word here only in N.T.) of the flesh," but not for the conscience (verse Hebrews 9:9). The cow was amwmon, the individual kaqarov.
