Hebrews 13:9

Concluding Religious Directions

7 Remember those who1 rule over you, who have spoken the word of God to you, whose faith follow, considering the outcome of their conduct.
8 Jesus Christ is athe same yesterday, today, and forever.
9 Do not be carried1 about with various and strange doctrines. For it is good that the heart be established by grace, not with foods which have not profited those who have been occupied with them.
10 We have an altar from which those who serve the tabernacle have no right to eat.
11 For the bodies of those animals, whose blood is brought into the sanctuary by the high priest for sin, are burned outside the camp.
12 Therefore Jesus also, that He might1 sanctify the people with His own blood, suffered outside the gate.
13 Therefore let us go forth to Him, outside the camp, bearing aHis reproach.
14 For here we have no continuing city, but we seek the one to come.
15 aTherefore by Him let us continually offer bthe sacrifice of praise to God, that is, cthe fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His name.
16 aBut do not forget to do good and to share, for bwith such sacrifices God is well pleased.
17 aObey those who1 rule over you, and be submissive, for bthey watch out for your souls, as those who must give account. Let them do so with joy and not with grief, for that would be unprofitable for you.

Prayer Requested

Hebrews 13:9

Be not carried away (mh paraferesqe). Prohibition with mh and present passive imperative of paraferw, old verb to lead along (Judges 1:12), to carry past (Mark 14:36), to lead astray as here.

By divers and strange teachings (didaxaiv poikilaiv kai cenaiv). For poikilov (many coloured) see Hebrews 2:4. Cenov for guest we have had in Hebrews 11:13, but here as adjective meaning unheard of (I Peter 4:12) as in older Greek also. The new is not always wrong any more than the old is always right (Matthew 13:52). But the air was already full of new and strange teachings that fascinated many by their very novelty. The warning here is always needed. Cf. Galatians 1:6-9; II Timothy 3:16.

That the heart be established by grace (xariti bebaiousqai thn kardian). Present passive infinitive of bebaiow (from bainw) to make stable with the instrumental case xariti (by grace) and the accusative of general reference (thn kardian). How true it is that in the atmosphere of so many windy theories only the heart is stable that has an experience of God's grace in Christ.

That occupied themselves (oi peripatountev). "That walked" in the ritualistic Jewish rules about meats.

Were not profited (ouk wfelhqhsan). First aorist passive indicative of wfelew, to help. Mere Jewish ceremonialism and ritualism failed to build up the spiritual life. It was sheer folly to give up Christ for Pharisaism or for Moses.
