James 2:6
Compare all
4 have you not1 shown partiality among yourselves, and become judges with evil thoughts?
5 Listen, my beloved brethren: aHas God not chosen the poor of this world to be brich in faith and heirs of the kingdom cwhich He promised to those who love Him?
6 But ayou have dishonored the poor man. Do not the rich oppress you band drag you into the courts?
7 Do they not blaspheme that noble name by which you are acalled?
8 If you really fulfill the royal law according to the Scripture, a“You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” you do well;
9 but if you1 show partiality, you commit sin, and are convicted by the law as atransgressors.
10 For whoever shall keep the whole law, and yet astumble in one point, bhe is guilty of all.
11 For He who said, a“Do not commit adultery,” also said, b“Do not murder.” Now if you do not commit adultery, but you do murder, you have become a transgressor of the law.

James 2:5-9

When Jesus speaks of the poor, He refers not only to those without money, but also to those whose simple values are despised by many in our affluent society. Perhaps they prefer serving to managing; human relations to financial security; and peace to power. Maybe that is what they prefer. This does not mean that the poor will automatically be in God's Kingdom and the rich will miss out. Poor people, however, are usually more aware of their powerlessness making it easier for them to acknowledge their need for salvation. One of the greatest barriers to salvation for the rich is pride. For the poor, it is bitterness. We must treat all people as we would want to be treated ourselves. So we should not ignore the rich because doing so would be withholding love. But we must not favor them for what they do for us while ignoring the poor who can offer us little in return.
