4 For if God did not spare the angels who sinned, but cast them down to1 hell and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved for judgment;  
5 and did not spare the ancient world, but saved Noah, one of eight people, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood on the world of the ungodly;
6 and turning the cities of aSodom and Gomorrah into ashes, condemned them to destruction, making them an example to those who afterward would live ungodly;  
7 and adelivered righteous Lot, who was oppressed by the filthy conduct of the wicked  
8 (for that righteous man, dwelling among them, atormented his righteous soul from day to day by seeing and hearing their lawless deeds)—  
9 then athe Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptations and to reserve the unjust under punishment for the day of judgment,  
10 and especially athose who walk according to the flesh in the lust of uncleanness and despise authority. bThey are presumptuous, self-willed. They are not afraid to speak evil of1 dignitaries,

What Does 2 Peter 2:5 Mean?

The ungodly are sinners who broke God's law, and being the just God He is, He judged according to His law. Unable to abide their rebellion, He wiped them out, yet desired to save them for resurrection and an opportunity for salvation at a better time. Our holy God cannot tolerate sin and is a righteous judge who loves righteousness and blesses the righteous. God saved only Noah, the preacher of righteousness, and his family from the Flood. The Greek noun for righteousness here, dikaiosuné (Strong's 1343), comes from the adjective dikaios (Strong's 1342), meaning righteous, upright, just, innocent, and guiltless. The same word describes God as "Just and true" in Revelation. Only the righteous Judge knows how to deliver His people from sin.




2 Peter 2:5

The ungodly are sinners. God, being the just God that He is, judged according to His law. He wanted to save these people so that they could be resurrected and given an opportunity for salvation at a better time. Not being able to abide their rebellion, He wiped them out because they were sinners, ungodly, breaking His law.
