15aDo not love the world or the things in the world. bIf anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
16 For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, athe lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world.
17 And athe world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.
Deceptions of the Last Hour
18aLittle children, bit is the last hour; and as you have heard that cthe Antichrist is coming, deven now many antichrists have come, by which we know ethat it is the last hour.
19aThey went out from us, but they were not of us; for bif they had been of us, they would have continued with us; but theywentoutcthat they might be made manifest, that none of them were of us.
20 But ayou have an anointing bfrom the Holy One, and cyou know all things.
Passeth away (paragetai). "Is passing by" (linear action, present middle indicative), as in verse I John 2:8. There is consolation in this view of the transitoriness of the conflict with the world. Even the lust which belongs to the world passes also. The one who keeps on doing (poiwn present active participle of poiew) the will of God "abides for ever" (menei eiv ton aiwna) "amid the flux of transitory things" (D. Smith).
