For this is the message that you heard from the beginning, athat we should love one another,
not as aCain who was of the wicked one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his works were evil and his brother’s righteous.
Do not marvel, my brethren, if athe world hates you.
We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love the brethren. He who does not love1his brother abides in death.
aWhoever hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that bno murderer has eternal life abiding in him.
The Outworking of Love
aBy this we know love, bbecause He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.
But awhoever has this world’s goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him?
My little children, alet us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth.
And by this we1 know athat we are of the truth, and shall2 assure our hearts before Him.
If (ei). Common construction after qaumazw (wonder) rather than oti (that, because). Present imperative here with mh means "cease wondering." Note mh qaumashv (do not begin to wonder) in John 3:6 (an individual case). See this same condition and language in John 15:18.
