Jude 1:8
Compare all
6 And the angels who did not keep their1 proper domain, but left their own abode, He has reserved in everlasting chains under darkness for the judgment of the great day;
7 as aSodom and Gomorrah, and the cities around them in a similar manner to these, having given themselves over to sexual immorality and gone after strange flesh, are set forth as an example, suffering the1 vengeance of eternal fire.
8 aLikewise also these dreamers defile the flesh, reject authority, and bspeak evil of dignitaries.
9 Yet Michael the archangel, in1 contending with the devil, when he disputed about the body of Moses, dared not bring against him a reviling accusation, but said, a“The Lord rebuke you!”
10 aBut these speak evil of whatever they do not know; and whatever they know naturally, like brute beasts, in these things they corrupt themselves.
11 Woe to them! For they have gone in the way aof Cain, bhave run greedily in the error of Balaam for profit, and perished cin the rebellion of Korah.

Apostates Depraved and Doomed

12 These are1 spots in your love feasts, while they feast with you without fear, serving only themselves. They are clouds without water, carried2 about by the winds; late autumn trees without fruit, twice dead, pulled up by the roots;
13 araging waves of the sea, bfoaming up their own shame; wandering stars cfor whom is reserved the blackness of darkness forever.

also—rather, "In like manner nevertheless" (notwithstanding these warning examples) [ALFORD].

these . . . dreamers—The Greek has not "filthy" of English Version. The clause, "these men dreaming" (that is, in their dreams), belongs to all the verbs, "defile," "despise," and "speak evil." All sinners are spiritually asleep, and their carnal activity is as it were a dream (I Thessalonians 5:6-7). Their speaking evil of dignities is because they are dreaming, and know not what they are speaking evil of (Judges 1:10). "As a man dreaming seems to himself to be seeing and nearing many things, so the natural man's lusts are agitated by joy, distress, fear, and the other passions. But he is a stranger to self-command. Hence, though he bring into play all the powers of reason, he cannot conceive the true liberty which the sons of light, who are awake and in the daylight; enjoy" [BENGEL].

defile the flesh— (Judges 1:7).

dominion—"lordship."

dignities—literally, "glories." Earthly and heavenly dignities.
