A Multitude from the Great Tribulation

9 After these things I looked, and behold, aa great multitude which no one could number, bof all nations, tribes, peoples, and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, cclothed with white robes, with palm branches in their hands,
10 and crying out with a loud voice, saying, a“Salvation belongs to our God bwho sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!”
11 aAll the angels stood around the throne and the elders and the four living creatures, and fell on their faces before the throne and bworshiped God,
12 asaying:
“Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom,
Thanksgiving and honor and power and might,
Be to our God forever and ever.
Amen.”
13 Then one of the elders answered, saying to me, “Who are these arrayed in awhite robes, and where did they come from?”

Revelation 7:9

Which no man could number (on ariqmhsai auton oudeiv edunato). Redundant repetition of the pronoun auton after the relative on as in Revelation 7:5; Revelation 3:8. Edunato imperfect indicative and ariqmhsai first aorist active infinitive of ariqmew, old verb, in N.T. only here, Matthew 10:30; Luke 12:7. See Revelation 5:9 (also Revelation 11:9; Revelation 13:7; Revelation 14:10; Revelation 17:15) for the list of words after ek (the spiritual Israel carried on all over the world), "a polyglott cosmopolitan crowd" (Swete).

Standing (estwtev). Same form in Revelation 7:1, only nominative masculine plural referring to oxlov (masculine singular), construction according to sense like the plural legontwn with oxlou in Revelation 19:1.

Arrayed (peribeblhmenouv). Perfect passive participle of periballw, but in the accusative plural (not nominative like estwtev), a common variation in this book when preceded by eidon and idou as in Revelation 4:4 (qronoi, presbuterouv). Charles regards this as a mere slip which would have been changed to peribeblhmenoi if John had read the MS. over.

In white robes (stolav leukav). Predicate accusative retained with this passive verb of clothing as in Revelation 7:13; Revelation 10:1; Revelation 11:3; Revelation 12:1; Revelation 17:4; Revelation 18:16; Revelation 19:13.

Palms (foinikev). Nominative again, back to construction with idou, not eidon. Old word, in N.T. only here for palm branches and John 12:13 for palm trees. Both these and the white robes are signs of victory and joy.
