Revelation 18:7
Compare all
5 aFor her sins have reached to heaven, and bGod has remembered her iniquities.
6 aRender to her just as she rendered1 to you, and repay her double according to her works; bin the cup which she has mixed, cmix double for her.
7 aIn the measure that she glorified herself and lived1 luxuriously, in the same measure give her torment and sorrow; for she says in her heart, ‘I sit as bqueen, and am no widow, and will not see sorrow.’
8 Therefore her plagues will come ain one day—death and mourning and famine. And bshe will be utterly burned with fire, cfor strong is the Lord God who1 judges her.

The World Mourns Babylon’s Fall

9 a“The kings of the earth who committed fornication and lived luxuriously with her bwill weep and lament for her, cwhen they see the smoke of her burning,
10 standing at a distance for fear of her torment, saying, a‘Alas, alas, that great city Babylon, that mighty city! bFor in one hour your judgment has come.’
11 “And athe merchants of the earth will weep and mourn over her, for no one buys their merchandise anymore:
12 amerchandise of gold and silver, precious stones and pearls, fine linen and purple, silk and scarlet, every kind of citron wood, every kind of object of ivory, every kind of object of most precious wood, bronze, iron, and marble;

Revelation 18:7

How much soever (osa). Indefinite quantitative relative pronoun osov in the accusative (cognate) neuter plural object of edocasen (first aorist active indicative of docazw).

Herself (authn). Reflexive pronoun, accusative also with edocasen.

Waxed wanton (estrhniasen). First aorist (ingressive) active indicative of strhniaw (to live luxuriously), verb in late comedy instead of trufaw (James 5:5), from strhnov (Revelation 18:3), only here in N.T.

So much give her of torment and mourning (tosouton dote auth basanismon kai penqov). Second aorist active imperative of didwmi, to give. The correlative pronoun tosouton is masculine singular accusative, agreeing with basanismon, for which see Revelation 9:5; Revelation 14:11, and is understood with the neuter word penqov (mourning), in N.T. only in James 4:9; Revelation 18:7 ff.; Revelation 21:4 (kin to paqos, penomai).

I sit a queen (kaqhmai basilissa). Predicate nominative for the old form basileia (basiliv), as in Matthew 12:42. Babylon and Tyre had preceded Rome in such boasting (Isaiah 47:7-9; Ezekiel 27:3; Ezekiel 28:2; Zephaniah 2:15).

And am no widow (kai xhra ouk eimi). Feminine of the adjective xhrov (barren), old word (Mark 12:40).

Shall in no wise see mourning (penqov ou mh idw). Confident boast of security with emphatic position of penqov (see above) and double negative ou mh with the second aorist active subjunctive of oraw (defective verb).
