Numbers 11:4-6
Excerpted from: Numbers: The Book of JudgmentNow, what were the sins? First of all, coveting. This is extracted from Numbers 11:4-6. One of the interesting things about this is that what they lusted for was food. Tell me, brethren, what is there that is evil about food? It says they lusted for evil things. Well, there is nothing evil about food, but their attitude caused something that God created for good to be seen in an evil light by God. Now you think this is impossible today?
You see, our attitude can turn good things into instruments of evil. These people had the most helpful and tasteful food available. A little bit later a psalmist called it angels food. They had plenty of it. They seem to have plenty of strength to be able to walk. They had plenty of strength to complain too. Moses seemed to get along just fine on it. But you see, their attitude made it seem bland and insufficient.
There is a lesson here. Human nature can never be satisfied. I mean, that is a fact of life. It cannot be satisfied, even when God is the provider. That is how perverse, how twisted, how deceitful it is. A person's perspective makes all the difference in the world. And these people were very quickly developing what I have called in the past, the welfare mentality. They looked upon themselves as victims being taken advantage of. It was impossible for them to have better protection, better food, better water, clothing that never wore out, shoes that did not wear out.

Excerpted from: Freedom and Unleavened BreadTo govern these free people was a tremendous burden for Moses because they weren't free of their slave mentality. They still thought like slaves. They kept rebelling to the extent that they YEARNED to go back to the bondage that they had YEARNED to come out of just a short time before.
What is interesting is that the problem on the surface here had to do with their diet. But that wasn't the real problem. The contrast, as God presents it, was between what was to them a plain and bland diet as compared to the rich and stimulating diet that they were accustomed to in Egypt. They wanted to be stimulated, but they didn't realize—because they were still thinking like slaves—that their tastes were entirely perverted, even their tastes in terms of food. What they were doing in despising the LORD was actually accusing Him—the One who made them—of not knowing any better what they needed to face the rigors of their life in the wilderness.

In another place the Bible calls this “angel’s food.” If angels really eat, that food does them really well! They do not die. This is just a little joke, but you see, the Israelites felt that they were entitled to something better than that.
