Numbers 21:26
Compare all
24 Then aIsrael defeated him with the edge of the sword, and took possession of his land from the Arnon to the Jabbok, as far as the people of Ammon; for the border of the people of Ammon was fortified.
25 So Israel took all these cities, and Israel adwelt in all the cities of the Amorites, in Heshbon and in all its villages.
26 For Heshbon was the city of Sihon king of the Amorites, who had fought against the former king of Moab, and had taken all his land from his hand as far as the Arnon.
27 Therefore those who speak in1 proverbs say:
“Come to Heshbon, let it be built;
Let the city of Sihon be repaired.
28 “For afire went out from Heshbon,
A flame from the city of Sihon;
It consumed bAr of Moab,
The lords of the cheights of the Arnon.
29 Woe to you, aMoab!
You have perished, O people of bChemosh!
He has given his csons as fugitives,
And his ddaughters into captivity,
To Sihon king of the Amorites.
30 “But we have shot at them;
Heshbon has perished aas far as Dibon.
Then we laid waste as far as Nophah,
Which reaches to bMedeba.”

Numbers 21:26

Was the city of Sihon - This is added as a reason why Israel took possession of this land, because it was not now the land of the Moabites, but in the possession of the Amorites. The former king - The predecessor of Balak, who was the present king. See the wisdom of providence, which prepares long before, for the accomplishing God's purposes in their season! This country being designed for Israel, is before - hand put into the hand of the Amorites, who little think they have it but as trustees, till Israel comes of age. We understand not the vast reaches of providence: but known unto God are all his works!
