Numbers 35:29
Compare all
27 and the avenger of blood finds him outside the limits of his city of refuge, and the avenger of blood kills the manslayer, he shall not be guilty of1 blood,
28 because he should have remained in his city of refuge until the death of the high priest. But after the death of the high priest the manslayer may return to the land of his possession.
29 ‘And these things shall be aa statute of judgment to you throughout your generations in all your dwellings.
30 Whoever kills a person, the murderer shall be put to death on the atestimony of witnesses; but one witness is not sufficient testimony against a person for the death penalty.
31 Moreover you shall take no ransom for the life of a murderer who is guilty of death, but he shall surely be put to death.
32 And you shall take no ransom for him who has fled to his city of refuge, that he may return to dwell in the land before the death of the priest.
33 So you shall not pollute the land where you are; for blood adefiles the land, and no atonement can be made for the land, for the blood that is shed on it, except bby the blood of him who shed it.

Numbers 35:9-34

So if Israel failed to keep the land from being polluted, the implication of Numbers 35:34 is that God would no longer be with His people in the land and that Israel would no longer be successful in the land, meaning it would not produce the bumper crops that God blesses it with. We have seen bumper crops for decades, if not centuries, in this nation and now they are starting to have more and more problems with fires and drought and so on. God warned of this many, many times in Scripture, but they do not read Scripture, so they do not know, so history repeats itself.

The cities of refuge were therefore a provision to enable Israel to keep the land. Without such a place the avenger of blood would hunt the person down and kill the accused without any determination of guilt or innocence, which would pollute the land. Though if the accused was innocent and killed by the avenger of blood, this would pollute the land and lead to the loss of the land. And this system was thus part of the Lord's gracious provision that enabled a sinful people to live with a holy God.
