Israel’s Refusal to Enter the Land

19 “So we departed from Horeb, aand went through all that great and terrible wilderness which you saw on the way to the mountains of the Amorites, as the Lord our God had commanded us. Then bwe came to Kadesh Barnea.
20 And I said to you, ‘You have come to the mountains of the Amorites, which the Lord our God is giving us.
21 Look, the Lord your God has set the land before you; go up and possess it, as the Lord God of your fathers has spoken to you; ado not fear or be discouraged.’
22 “And every one of you came near to me and said, ‘Let us send men before us, and let them search out the land for us, and bring back word to us of the way by which we should go up, and of the cities into which we shall come.’

Deuteronomy 1:19-21

These examples in God's Word are recorded to show us how human nature is going to react. There are those who have gone before us, to search out the land. And they bring back a good report of how wonderful our inheritance is. Who are they, who have gone before us? Well, it is the apostles, and the prophets, and primarily Jesus Christ. It is that "great cloud of witnesses" that Paul spoke of in Hebrews, whose reports we read in the Book. But think of Moses as being Jesus, who said not to be discouraged or doubt.

Deuteronomy 1:19-22

The vision and trust of a few, in spite of perceived circumstances at the time, would cause the generations down the road to inherit God's promise!

An interesting thing to also note is that not only did the vision of God's promise motivate Joshua and Caleb to seek to do God's will when Israel had the first opportunity to enter the land, but it sustained them and led them to patiently wait, grow, learn, and serve through forty difficult years in the wilderness.
