Joshua 23:6

4 See, ^aI have divided to you by lot these nations that remain, to be an inheritance for your tribes, from the Jordan, with all the nations that I have cut off, as far as the Great Sea westward.

5 And the Lord your God ^awill expel them from before you and drive them out of your sight. So you shall possess their land, ^bas the Lord your God promised you.

6 ^aTherefore be very courageous to keep and to do all that is written in the Book of the Law of Moses, ^blest you turn aside from it to the right hand or to the left,

7 and lest you ^ago among these nations, these who remain among you. You shall not ^bmake mention of the name of their gods, nor cause anyone to ^cswear by them; you shall not ^dserve them nor bow down to them,

8 but you shall ^ahold fast to the Lord your God, as you have done to this day.

9 ^aFor the Lord has driven out from before you great and strong nations; but as for you, no one has been able to stand against you to this day.

10 ^aOne man of you shall chase a thousand, for the Lord your God is He who fights for you, ^bas He promised you.

BY PROMISES. (Joshua 23:5-11)

the Lord your God, he shall expel them from before you, as the Lord your God hath promised you, etc.—The actual possessions which God had given were a pledge of the complete fulfilment of His promise in giving them the parts of the country still unconquered. But the accomplishment of the divine promise depended on their inviolable fidelity to God's law—on their keeping resolutely aloof from all familiar intercourse and intimate connections with the Canaanites, or in any way partaking of their idolatrous sins. In the event of their continuing in steadfast adherence to the cause of God, as happily distinguished the nation at that time, His blessing would secure them a course of brilliant and easy victories (Leviticus 26:7; Deuteronomy 28:7; Deuteronomy 32:30).
