Then the Angel of the Lord came up from Gilgal to Bochim, and said: a“I led you up from Egypt and bbrought you to the land of which I swore to your fathers; and cI said, ‘I will never break My covenant with you.
And ayou shall make no covenant with the inhabitants of this land; byou shall tear down their altars.’ cBut you have not obeyed My voice. Why have you done this?
Therefore I also said, ‘I will not drive them out before you; but they shall be athorns in your side, and btheir gods shall be a csnare to you.’ ”
So it was, when the Angel of the Lord spoke these words to all the children of Israel, that the people lifted up their voices and wept.
Then they called the name of that place1 Bochim; and they sacrificed there to the Lord.
The two articles of the covenant here specified (compare margin references) are those which the Israelites had at this time broken. The other important prohibition Deuteronomy 7:3 is not specified by the Angel, and this is an indication that at the time the Angel spoke, intermarriages with the pagan spoken of Judges 3:6 had not taken place; and this again is another evidence of the early date of this occurrence.
