1 Kings 3:6

4 Now ^athe king went to Gibeon to sacrifice there, ^bfor that was the great high place: Solomon offered a thousand burnt offerings on that altar.

5 ^aAt Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon ^bin a dream by night; and God said, “Ask! What shall I give you?”

6 ^aAnd Solomon said: “You have shown great mercy to Your servant David my father, because he ^bwalked before You in truth, in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart with You; You have continued this great kindness for him, and You ^chave given him a son to sit on his throne, as it is this day.

7 Now, O Lord my God, You have made Your servant king instead of my father David, but I am a ^alittle child; I do not know how ^bto go out or come in.

8 And Your servant is in the midst of Your people whom You ^ahave chosen, a great people, too ^bnumerous to be numbered or counted.

9 ^aTherefore give to Your servant an¹ understanding heart ^bto judge Your people, that I may ^cdiscern between good and evil. For who is able to judge this great people of Yours?”

10 The speech pleased the Lord, that Solomon had asked this thing.

11 Then God said to him: “Because you have asked this thing, and have ^anot asked long life for yourself, nor have asked riches for yourself, nor have asked the life of your enemies, but have asked for yourself understanding to discern justice,

12 ^abehold, I have done according to your words; ^bsee, I have given you a wise and understanding heart, so that there has not been anyone like you before you, nor shall any like you arise after you.

13 And I have also ^agiven you what you have not asked: both ^briches and honor, so that there shall not be anyone like you among the kings all your days.

American Standard Version
And Solomon said, Thou hast showed unto thy servant David my father great lovingkindness, according as he walked before thee in truth, and in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart with thee; and thou hast kept for him this great lovingkindness, that thou hast given him a son to sit on his throne, as it is this day.

Amplified® Bible
Solomon said, You have shown to Your servant David my father great mercy {and} loving-kindness, according as he walked before You in faithfulness, righteousness, and uprightness of heart with You; and You have kept for him this great kindness {and} steadfast love, that You have given him a son to sit on his throne this day.

Contemporary English Version
Solomon answered: My father David, your servant, was honest and did what you commanded. You were always loyal to him, and you gave him a son who is now king.

And Solomon said, Thou hast shewn unto thy servant David my father great loving-kindness, according as he walked before thee in truth, and in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart with thee; and thou hast kept for him this great loving-kindness, that thou hast given him a son who sits upon his throne, as it is this day.

And Solomon saith, `Thou hast done with Thy servant David my father great kindness, as he walked before Thee in truth and in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart with Thee, and Thou dost keep for him this great kindness, and dost give to him a son sitting on his throne, as `at' this day.

New English Translation
Solomon replied, “You demonstrated¹ great loyalty to your servant, my father David, as he served² you faithfully, properly, and sincerely.³ You have maintained this great loyalty to this day by allowing his son to sit on his throne.⁴
