The meaning of Rest in the Bible
(From Easton's Bible Dictionary)

  • Gr. katapausis, equivalent to the Hebrew word noah (Hebrews 4:1).

  • Gr. anapausis, "rest from weariness" (Matthew 11:28).

  • Gr. anesis, "relaxation" (II Thessalonians 1:7).

  • Gr. sabbatismos, a Sabbath rest, a rest from all work (Hebrews 4:9; RSV, "sabbath"), a rest like that of God when he had finished the work of creation.
