The Family of Hosea
a“Go, take yourself a wife of harlotry
And children of harlotry,
For bthe land has committed great harlotry
By departing from the Lord.”
“Call his name Jezreel,
For in a little while
aI will avenge the bloodshed of Jezreel on the house of Jehu,
bAnd bring an end to the kingdom of the house of Israel.
That I will break the bow of Israel in the Valley of Jezreel.”
“Call her name1 Lo-Ruhamah,
aFor I will no longer have mercy on the house of Israel,
1But I will utterly take them away.
Will save them by the Lord their God,
And bwill not save them by bow,
Nor by sword or battle,
By horses or horsemen.”
The Restoration of Israel
Shall be as the sand of the sea,
Which cannot be measured or numbered.
bAnd it shall come to pass
In the place where it was said to them,
‘You are1 not My cpeople,’
There it shall be said to them,
‘You are dsons of the living God.’
Shall be gathered together,
And appoint for themselves one head;
And they shall come up out of the land,
For great will be the day of Jezreel!

Hosea 1:2
A wife of whoredoms - That is, says Newcome, a wife from among the Israelites, who were remarkable for spiritual fornication, or idolatry. God calls himself the husband of Israel; and this chosen nation owed him the fidelity of a wife. See Exodus 34:15; Deuteronomy 31:16; Judges 2:17; Isaiah 54:5; Jeremiah 3:14; Jeremiah 31:32, Ezekiel 16:17; Ezekiel 23:5, Ezekiel 23:27; Hosea 2, Hosea 5:1-15; Revelation 17:1, Revelation 17:2. He therefore says, with indignation, Go join thyself in marriage to one of those who have committed fornication against me, and raise up children who, by the power of example, will themselves swerve to idolatry. See Hosea 5:7. And thus show them that they are radically depraved.
