We are saved—receive salvation—by a living Jesus Christ! After He died, God the Father raised Him from the dead. Today, Christ is alive and powerful and sits at God's right hand to make intercession for us. He will help us overcome sin and live righteously as He did (Hebrews 4:14-16).
Our Savior's perfect, sacrificial life and death were not merely displays of His righteous prowess. God the Father required Christ's unblemished life and death so that the law's legal requirement—that there is a price for every person's sins—could be satisfied once for all by His shed blood (II Corinthians 5:15; Hebrews 9:28).
The apostle John uses hilasmos (Strong's #2434) to describe Jesus Christ. In I John 2:2, John writes, “And He [Christ] is the propitiation [hilasmos] for our sins,” which is to say that His sacrifice satisfied the legal requirements of God's law and holiness for the punishment of sin. Therefore, through the ultimate act of mercy and grace, Christ became our propitiation and our Advocate (I John 4:10).
