Teachability

Psalm 139:23-24
We have to ask God to do the same thing in our lives, especially during the time before Passover. Human nature is blind to problems in our character, so we have to ask God to show us the things that we cannot see. A main characteristic of a converted person is willingness to admit when wrong and then to repent. If we justify our faults, we may as well not bother to look for them. If we do, we will be the person who looked in the mirror, saw their faults, and then walked away doing nothing about them (James 1:23-24). We can see many of our own faults by observing the mistakes of others, if we do not have a superior and critical attitude toward them. We have to be humble and esteem others better than ourselves before we are able to learn from their mistakes. It is a matter of being teachable.

Hosea 4:6
God is serious! The penalty for rejecting God's teaching, for not learning, is that we will be barred from becoming priests, the Christian's promised vocation if he enters the Kingdom of God (see Revelation 5:10). God says something similar in Leviticus 26:23-24: "If after all of this punishment you still do not listen to me, but continue to defy me, then I will turn on you and punish you seven times harder than before" (Today's English Version). The key phrase here is "if you still do not listen to me." We must not fail to heed God.

Are You Teachable?

Matthew 18:2-5
The word "converted" means to change or turn. Specifically, it means to change from one way of life or set of beliefs to another. Sometimes it means "regeneration"—beginning to live a new spiritual life (Psalm 51:10-13, 17). Jesus tells the disciples that their attitudes of ambition are wrong, and they must change or have no part in His Kingdom. To do this, they must be like small children, who, for the most part, lack arrogance and pride. Children are characteristically humble and teachable (I Corinthians 14:20). According to Mark, Jesus teaches them that, "if anyone desires to be first, he shall be last of all and servant of all" (Mark 9:35). The most humble Christian will be the most distinguished, and he who is willing to be esteemed last and least will be esteemed first. To regard oneself as God regards us is humility. One who receives and loves someone with an innocent child's humble attitude, who may be weak in the faith, displays true Christian character and loves Jesus Christ (Matthew 25:35-40). "Receive" in verse 5 means to approve, love, or treat with kindness; to aid in time of need.

Luke 16:8
Remember, Jesus addresses this parable to His disciples, so He is giving them advice. "The sons of this world" or this time (the unconverted, who have their minds set on the things of this life) are wiser by nature than "the sons of light" (the converted). Paul concedes that God calls few who are wise by nature because their wisdom is foolishness to God (I Corinthians 1:26-27). Such "wise" people are too proud to surrender to their Creator, so God calls those who are not as shrewd, who sometimes lack forethought, but are teachable.
